The truth is the journey was never planned, it just started…
After over a decade of wedding photography I felt I needed a change. Year after year shooting the same thing had left me feeling in a bit of a rut. Yes, I’d had an amazing time, not just enjoying the work but also having two bodies of work go viral in a very, very big way. But I’ll be honest, once I’d done that, part of the challenge had faded away. I’d set out to be different that all the rest, and I’d achieved it.
There was also the fact that I desperately wanted my weekends back. Spending time with your own wife is always better than spending time with someone else’s. It was time to evolve.
I’d been looking into getting a drone for photography for a while. However, I couldn’t justify dropping a couple of grand on something that was an unknown. I was torn. Fortunately an opportunity came along where I was able to swap a spare camera for a drone. So I took the plunge and exchanged a Sony A7R for a Blade Chroma 4K. I had nothing to lose.
The first flight, or rather the first “let’s see if I can take off and not crash attempt” was at the local oval. It took me back to my childhood, Christmas day morning playing with a remote control car for the first time. Unlike that Christmas many moons ago, I didn’t crash.
Then came the first proper flight…
Living less than 500m from the ocean has it’s benefits, the skies above my local beach were now my new playground. Once in the air I saw the world through a new set of eyes. Soaring like an angel above looking down on the earth below, I’d found my heaven.
But it didn’t stop there…
I’ve got a knack for looking for images within images as anyone who is familiar with my wedding work will know. With the drone it was no different. By my third flight I’d found my next project… Surgimago was born.
